Top Canadian military chief pledges public release of Wainwright fire investigation findings

Gen. Jennie Carignan announced that the results of the inquiry into the fatal brush fire at CFB Wainwright will be made public.

A fast-moving brush fire at the training range of CFB Wainwright in Alberta claimed the lives of four soldiers and left 39 others injured, 19 critically. Gen. Jennie Carignan, chief of the defence staff, confirmed that three investigations are proceeding: a military board of inquiry, a technical assessment, and a civilian coroner's inquiry led by Alberta’s medical examiner with RCMP assistance. She is drafting the board’s terms of reference and pledged that its conclusions will be released publicly once completed.

The fire erupted while C Company, 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, conducted grenade-throwing drills, and a sudden wind shift drove the flames toward roughly 84 troops. Tributes were offered in the House of Commons, and Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed confidence in the investigative process while promising full resources for the inquiry.

Why it matters

The public release of the investigation will provide transparency about a deadly military training incident and address families' and citizens' concerns.
