Top Democrats and immigrant groups file lawsuit challenging federal voter-fraud investigations

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and others joined a California immigrant and the Nevada State Democratic Party in suing the Trump administration over its voter-fraud probes.

In a federal suit lodged in Washington, D.C., Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, the Nevada State Democratic Party and a California immigrant joined forces to challenge the Trump administration's voter-fraud investigations. The complaint alleges that President Trump, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and Attorney General Todd Blanche are employing poorly compiled lists of supposed noncitizens and threatening legal action against state officials to assert federal dominance over the upcoming midterm elections.

Among the plaintiffs is Erick Jose Jimenez, a naturalized citizen since 2006, who says he worries about being mistakenly labeled a noncitizen. Administration spokespeople maintain that the measures are lawful, aimed at prosecuting illegal voting and safeguarding election security. Democratic leaders and election experts acknowledge isolated fraud but contend there is no evidence of widespread wrongdoing. The suit also references earlier litigation involving a list of 20,000 alleged noncitizens in California, which has been described as inaccurate by the courts.

Why it matters

The case could shape how federal agencies intervene in state election administration and affect voter registration practices.
