Top Magnesium Supplements for Daily Use, Backed by Nutrition Experts

Nutritionists Maz Packham and Jess Shand evaluate several magnesium products, highlighting forms, absorption rates, and recommended dosages for everyday health.

Research on magnesium’s role in sleep shows it can shorten the time needed to fall asleep and may enhance sleep quality, but results vary across studies. A systematic review of nine trials involving 7,582 adults found some positive links but no consistent proof of benefit. Dr. Naoki Umeda, a integrative-medicine specialist at Cleveland Clinic, explains that magnesium glycinate and magnesium L-treonate are the preferred forms for sleep because they are well absorbed and gentler on the gut.

Forms such as magnesium citrate and magnesium oxide are more likely to cause loose stools or abdominal discomfort, potentially worsening insomnia. He recommends an initial dose of 100-200 mg elemental magnesium taken 30 minutes before sleep, emphasizing the need to verify the elemental amount on labels. Excessive intake can lead to diarrhea, nausea, and, in severe cases, toxicity, especially for people with kidney problems or those taking certain medications. Finally, he suggests adopting proven sleep hygiene practices before relying on supplements.
