Toronto police to brief media on two soldiers charged with 49 offences

Toronto police will hold a press briefing on Wednesday to update the public about two reservists from the 7th Toronto Regiment who face 49 criminal charges.

A Toronto police briefing set for Wednesday at 11 a.m. ET will provide the latest on a case involving two Canadian Armed Forces reservists. The accused, 22-year-old Sachintha Fernando and 29-year-old James Moreau, were taken into custody on Aug. 11 and face a total of 49 charges, including kidnapping for ransom, forcible confinement and illegal use of a firearm. Fernando also faces several firearms-related offences such as unauthorized possession of a prohibited device and careless ammunition storage.

Both men belong to the 7th Toronto Regiment; Moreau served on Operation LASER in 2020, while Fernando has not been deployed overseas. Following their arrests, they were stripped of military duties and their access to equipment and bases was limited, though they remain enlisted pending the outcome of an administrative review. Police Chief Myron Demkiw and Superintendent Joe Matthews will field questions from the media.

Why it matters
