Tottenham finalize €40 million transfer of defender Cristian Romero to Atletico Madrid
Tottenham Hotspur have agreed to sell centre-back Cristian Romero to Atletico Madrid for €40 million, ending his spell at the club.
Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid to transfer Cristian Romero for a €40 million package, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano. The Argentine defender, 28, has been with Spurs since a loan spell and a permanent move in 2022, making 156 appearances and scoring 13 times, and played a part in the club's Europa League triumph in the 2024/25 campaign. Recent defensive acquisitions Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi have given Tottenham depth at centre-back, prompting the club to move Romero on.
Management intends to use the proceeds to secure a marquee winger capable of delivering match-winning quality, as well as a consistent centre-forward. Targets mentioned include Folarin Balogun, with interest also shown in Savinho, while injuries have limited the contributions of Dominic Solanke and Richarlison.
Why it matters
The deal frees up funds for Tottenham to strengthen their attack ahead of the next season.
