Townsville mayor fined $1,036 after bar clash on Magnetic Island
Mayor Nick Dametto received a disorderly-behaviour infringement and a $1,036 fine following an altercation with a staffer of LNP member Adam Baillie at a Nelly Bay pub.
An investigation by police into a June 7 confrontation at a Nelly Bay bar on Magnetic Island ended with Mayor Nick Dametto being issued an infringement notice for disorderly behaviour near a licensed premises and fined $1,036. The dispute involved a 28-year-old staffer of LNP member for Townsville Adam Baillie, though the staffer faced no allegations. Dametto, a former Katter's Australia Party MP who resigned from state parliament to run for mayor in November 2025, initially declined media queries before describing the incident as "over-inflated" and saying he did not expect any charges.
He had earlier emphasized his intention to maintain a constructive relationship with Baillie. No criminal charges were laid against either party. The mayor’s earlier criticism for drinking a full-strength beer on a restricted beach was also noted in the background.
Why it matters
The fine highlights accountability for public officials involved in off-duty disputes.
