Toyota to debut hydrogen-fuel-cell Hilux with water-only exhaust at 2027 Dakar Rally
Toyota will enter a fuel-cell version of its Hilux in the 2027 Dakar Rally, where the vehicle will emit only water from its exhaust.
Toyota revealed plans to field two Hilux models at the 2027 Dakar Rally: a standard top-category version and a hydrogen fuel-cell variant for the Dakar Future Mission 1000 class. The fuel-cell Hilux, built by Gazoo Racing and dubbed DKR GR FC, swaps the 400-horsepower, 660 Nm twin-turbo V6 for an as-yet-undisclosed second-generation 2.5-litre fuel-cell system. This system stores high-pressure hydrogen, uses electro-chemical reactions to produce electricity and releases only clean water through the exhaust pipe.
Without a heavy 700-800 kg battery, the vehicle relies on electric motors to drive the wheels. Over 13 stages and roughly 1,000 competitive kilometres, the prototype will be tested for power output, safety standards and durability, building on the proven DKR GR Hilux platform.
