Toyota to launch first electric vehicle with range-extending gasoline engine in 2027
Toyota plans to begin series production of an electric car that also uses a gasoline engine solely for generating electricity, targeting the Chinese market from April 2027.
Toyota, long known for hybrid technology, is set to commence production of its first fully electric car that incorporates a gasoline engine used only to produce electricity, with the rollout slated for April 2027. The model is being engineered specifically for the Chinese market, reflecting local demand for extended driving range, and there are no current plans to sell it worldwide. In China, extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) have gained strong popularity, offering combined ranges that can reach up to 1,000 kilometres.
Toyota's previous year sales included 4.4 million hybrids, 180 thousand plug-in hybrids and a substantial number of pure electric cars. The new model represents a shift toward pure electric powertrains while retaining a range-extending generator for added flexibility.
