Tractor-trailer overturn dumps tons of squid onto Rhode Island road, creating foul odor

A tractor-trailer tipped over in Narragansett, spilling a large load of squid onto a street and producing a strong smell that lingered for hours.

In Narragansett, Rhode Island, a tractor-trailer carrying squid overturned during a turn, causing a sizable spill of the seafood onto a local intersection. Police were dispatched at 9:27 a.m., and the site stayed blocked until 5:15 p.m. as crews used a dump truck and other equipment to remove the slippery, odorous cargo. The driver and a passenger were unharmed, and no other vehicles were involved.

Local authorities have humorously labeled the incident the “Squidpocalypse of ’26.” The Rhode Island State Police Commercial Enforcement Unit is reviewing the case, but officials say no citations have been issued yet. Residents noted the distinctive, unpleasant smell as the squid sat in the summer heat.

Why it matters

The spill caused a major traffic disruption and highlighted safety concerns for hazardous food cargoes on public roads.
