Transport group PISTON calls for two-day nationwide strike over fuel price hikes

Transport organization PISTON revealed plans for a nationwide strike on Tuesday, September 29, and Wednesday, September 30, targeting the recent surge in fuel prices. President Mody Floranda said the action will draw not only transport workers but also labor unions and urban-poor groups. The decision came after a protest held on Aurora Boulevard at the Westpoint Street corner in Cubao, Quezon City, where diesel prices rose by roughly P7.80 per litre.
Floranda urged the government to swiftly repeal the excise tax and value-added tax on fuel to lower costs. Law-enforcement and traffic management agencies were deployed to maintain peace during the Cubao rally. The strike is intended to compel authorities to act against what the group calls a "big-time" oil price hike.
