Travellers continue building on North Yorkshire site despite High Court injunction
A High Court injunction aimed at halting unauthorised development on a traveller site near Hillam has been ignored, with lorries still delivering materials.
Planning officers from North Yorkshire Council served an interim High Court injunction on September 19 to block any additional building, caravans, hard-standing or utility work at an unauthorised traveller settlement near Hillam, west of Selby. Despite the order, councilor Tim Grogan reports that the occupants have ignored the injunction and that heavy goods vehicles kept bringing hardcore, earth-moving equipment and at least 14 caravans onto the land.
The council had previously issued a temporary stop notice on September 14 and escalated the matter to the courts. North Yorkshire Police assisted enforcement officers when the injunction was served. Council’s community development director Nic Harne said the order remains in force until a hearing at the Leeds District Registry on October 21, after which further action may be taken.
