Treasury chief announces new sanctions targeting Iranian airline and another bank
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the administration has imposed sanctions on an Iranian airline and plans to sanction an additional bank this week.
At a recent economic policy event, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the administration has sanctioned an Iranian airline and intends to target another bank within the week. He highlighted previous actions such as shutting down a Dubai branch of the second-largest Egyptian bank, which had moved $1.8 billion to Iran, and closing a Turkish bank with similar links. Bessent said these steps are part of a comprehensive blockade designed to cut all financial lifelines to the Iranian regime.
He also referenced a UK report about two London penthouses allegedly owned by the Ayatollah being put up for auction. Using a snake analogy, Bessent suggested Iran’s leadership is unaware of its own demise as pressure mounts. The Treasury’s message is that any financial actor supporting Iran will be identified and punished.
Why it matters
The sanctions aim to further isolate Iran financially, increasing pressure on its government and limiting its ability to fund contentious activities.
