Trial reveals alleged murderer drove over cyclist, dragging him for over a mile

At Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court, Simon Richardson is accused of hitting 56-year-old cyclist Michael Mullins and pulling him under his Volvo for about 1.3 miles before leaving him to die.

The Crown Prosecution Service presented evidence at Minshull Street Crown Court that Simon Richardson, driving a black Volvo XC90, overtook a car on Dunham Road before colliding with Michael Mullins, a 56-year-old teacher cycling home from Stretford Grammar School on April 20. Witnesses described Richardson’s vehicle accelerating past the junction and continuing for roughly 1.3 miles, dragging Mullins under the car until it stopped on a grass verge.

Prosecutors showed a 17-second dash-cam video of the overtaking maneuver and an ANPR photo of the Volvo with a dent on the front right. Dr Terrence McGloughlin explained that Mullins survived the impact but later died from a combination of injuries, respiratory failure and cardiac arrest, noting that the Apple Watch still logged a heart-rate signal after the crash. Defence counsel questioned the reliability of the watch data, while Dr Chaz Dixon corroborated the vehicle’s GPS route, confirming the collision’s location. Richardson, who has no fixed address, denies murder, manslaughter and dangerous driving, and the trial continues.
