Triple killer Darryl Young files appeal against life sentences in Queensland

Darryl Valroy Young, a 63-year-old grazier and former coal miner from the Bogie area near Bowen in Queensland's Whitsunday region, was found guilty by a jury of three murders and one attempted murder that occurred at the gate of his cattle station in 2022. The victims were neighbours Mervyn Schwarz, 71, Maree Schwarz, 59, and their son Graham Tighe, 35; Graham's brother Ross Tighe, 36, survived with a gunshot wound. In a four-week Supreme Court trial in Townsville, Justice Christopher Johnstone sentenced Young to three life sentences with a 40-year non-parole period, reportedly the longest such sentence in Queensland history. On the day of sentencing, a Queensland Courts spokesperson confirmed that Young had filed an appeal against both the conviction and the sentence, and that the Court of Appeal has yet to schedule a hearing date.
