Tropical Storm Chan-hom sweeps Tokyo region, knocks out power for thousands
Tropical Storm Chan-hom struck the greater Tokyo area, toppling trees and leaving over 3,000 homes without electricity while causing minor injuries.
Chan-hom touched down in the Tokyo metropolitan area late Tuesday, weakening after its initial landfall in Ibaraki prefecture. The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded sustained winds of 64 km/h as the system moved westward, reaching near Gifu by Wednesday and heading for Wakasa Bay. The storm toppled trees, including one in the upscale Omotesando district, and left more than 3,000 homes without power across Ibaraki and Tochigi, according to TEPCO Power Grid.
Five individuals suffered minor injuries - two men in Iwate and three women in Ibaraki -. Travel was disrupted, with roughly 60 flights at Haneda airport canceled and the popular Oarai beach shut down. The event follows typhoon Dolphin, which recently caused fatalities in the Philippines and flooding in China.
