Tropical Storm Rachel threatens flash floods and strong winds in Southern California

Tropical Storm Rachel is approaching Southern California, prompting warnings of dangerous flash floods, heavy rain and high winds.

Authorities are preparing for Tropical Storm Rachel as it moves toward Southern California, bringing the risk of severe flash flooding and damaging winds. The National Weather Service issued an alert highlighting the potential for life-threatening rain, rapid river overflow and the need for evacuations, especially in San Diego County. Radar shows rain bands already reaching Orange and San Diego counties, with the greatest rainfall expected in the mountains and deserts, where up to 4 inches could fall.

A 40% chance of flash floods exists in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, including areas such as Palm Springs and Joshua Tree National Park. Wind gusts may top 73 mph, likely to snap trees, damage fences and cause power and communication disruptions. Meteorologists note the storm’s unusual intensity is linked to an emerging El Niño pattern and record-warm ocean temperatures off the California coast.

Why it matters

The storm could cause widespread flooding, infrastructure damage and dangerous travel conditions for millions of residents.
