Truck crashes into Gwalior temple crowd, killing at least ten devotees
At least ten devotees were killed and several injured when a speeding, overloaded truck plowed into the crowd near Sheetla Mata Temple in Gwalior early Sunday.
Early Sunday morning, a paddy-laden truck disregarded a police checkpoint on the Chhinor approach to Gwalior’s Sheetla Mata Temple and careened into the temple’s outer gate, running over a gathering of devotees. The crash, which occurred at about 1.30 am, resulted in at least ten fatalities and sent 39 people to hospitals, including five or six in critical condition and two injured police officers. Gwalior SSP Dharmveer Singh reported the vehicle had broken through barricades and veered left before hitting the wall.
Collector Ruchika Chauhan confirmed that the checkpoint was part of Navratri security measures and that an RTO team is inspecting the truck to find out why it veered. Authorities have launched an inquiry into how the overloaded vehicle accessed the restricted road.
Why it matters
The tragedy underscores road-safety failures and crowd protection gaps during major religious festivals.
