Truckers protest fuel price hikes, causing highway jams and supermarket shortages in southern Italy
Truck drivers across southern Italy have intensified protests over rising fuel costs, leading to major highway blockages and near-empty supermarket shelves in several regions.
Truckers affiliated with Fedralog have escalated their protest against soaring fuel prices, maintaining road presences and slow-downs throughout southern Italy. The action, which started on Friday and is slated to end tomorrow evening, forced the closure of the A1-A30 interchange, resulting in an 8-km traffic jam between Caserta Sud and Santa Maria Capua Vetere and a shorter queue on the A30. The blockade also reached the Bausan gate of the Napoli commercial port, adding to congestion.
Supermarkets in Catanzaro, Foggia and Termoli show depleted stocks of milk, flour, pasta and fresh produce, reflecting supply-chain strain. Police road units and staff from Autostrade per l’Italia are present at key points, while regional governor Antonio Decaro is expected to meet a delegation of drivers. The protest continues as transport unions await the outcome of an upcoming meeting in Milan with Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini.
Why it matters
The blockade threatens food supply chains and disrupts major transport routes, affecting daily life and the economy.
