Truck’s onboard data links driver to fatal Greenwood hit-and-run

Prosecutors argue that the infotainment system in Bud Ackerman’s Ford F-250 recorded a route and speed that prove he deliberately ran over Davis McClendon in Greenwood, South Carolina.

When police arrived at a Greenwood intersection shortly after 1 a.m., they discovered a mangled BMW and the dead driver, Davis McClendon, lying about 50 feet from his car. Meredith Haynie, who had been with McClendon earlier, reported that Ackerman had been harassing her by phone and that McClendon may have been heading to meet him. Officers retrieved the infotainment system from Ackerman’s Ford F-250, which logged over 3,000 time-stamped events, including Wi-Fi connections to nearby businesses and detailed vehicle performance metrics.

The digital “handshakes” mapped a route that included the Key West Club, Break on the Lake restaurant, Haynie’s residence, and the crash site. Speed and wheel-slip data indicated the truck was traveling about 25 mph and lost traction at 1:11:33 a.m., moments before the impact. Subsequent logs showed the vehicle stopping, the driver opening the door, shifting to park, and later disconnecting his phone before leaving the scene.
