Trump administration proposes voluntary seafood origin label and industry loan program
The administration plans to introduce a voluntary "U.S. Caught Seafood" label for grocery store products and to offer $5 billion in USDA loans for U.S. fishermen.
Two senior officials disclosed that the Trump administration intends to roll out a voluntary "U.S. Caught Seafood" label, crafted by the Food and Drug Administration, to inform consumers about the origin of seafood sold in supermarkets. The label would not be compulsory. The announcement coincides with President Trump's campaign stop in Fort Myers, Florida, where he backs Senate candidate Ashley Moody and gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds before heading to Mar-a-Lago.
Government statistics reveal that roughly 80% of the seafood Americans ate in 2023 was imported, whereas U.S. commercial fishermen harvested $5.1 billion worth of product. To bolster the domestic fishing sector, the USDA is set to provide $5 billion in loans for equipment upgrades. The initiatives aim to increase transparency for shoppers and strengthen the U.S. fishing industry ahead of the midterm elections.
Why it matters
The label could boost demand for U.S. fish while the loan program supports domestic fishermen amid heavy import reliance.
