Trump administration redirects most unaccompanied migrant children to Texas shelters

Researchers at bklg.org found that nearly all unaccompanied migrant children with new court cases in July and August were routed to Texas, amounting to about 925 minors in the Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement system. Lawmakers and NGOs fear the strategy could evolve into a mass internal apprehension effort, funneling children toward repatriation flights from the southern border. Meanwhile, ORR is seeking contracts for emergency shelters with up to 3,000 beds, despite the agency operating at roughly 27% capacity and border encounters remaining low. Officials argue the contracts provide rapid response capability, but critics highlight potential conflicts of interest and the moral implications of detaining children in such conditions.
