Trump administration reports zero releases and 94% drop in border apprehensions

The Trump administration announced that, as of Thursday, there have been no releases at the border for 15 straight months and that daily apprehensions have dropped 94% from the figures recorded under the previous administration, reaching a three-decade low. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin attributed the outcome to President Trump's border-security strategy and pledged swift removal of illegal entrants. In July, seizures of illegal drugs increased by 26% and Customs and Border Protection identified $23 billion in duties to be collected.

CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott highlighted the role of clear policy and frontline personnel in achieving these results. Meanwhile, the House of Representatives is moving a bill, the Permanent Trump Secure Border Act, that would criminalize visa overstays, end most "catch and release" practices, and fund modernized border technology and staffing.
