Trump administration settles 18 federal discrimination probes with UNC Chapel Hill

The Trump administration reached a settlement with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, ending 18 federal investigations into alleged race discrimination and antisemitism.

President Donald Trump's administration and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have concluded a voluntary settlement that closes 18 federal probes into claims of race discrimination and antisemitism. The deal, effective until the end of 2028, does not involve a financial payment and leaves UNC eligible for federal funds, though the university does not admit liability. UNC will assign Elizabeth Hall as both internal administrator and compliance coordinator, overseeing a new antisemitism training program for students, faculty, and staff.

Protest-related rules will prohibit masks or other coverings that hide identity, and student groups may face discipline for antisemitic conduct. The university must also maintain non-discriminatory admissions policies without racial proxies, while still considering adversity and family background factors. Quarterly reports of any discrimination complaints will be submitted to the Justice and Education Departments. The settlement follows broader federal actions against universities over diversity and free-speech issues.

Why it matters

The deal ends a high-profile federal investigation while imposing new compliance requirements on a major public university.
