Trump administration ties federal transit grants to local marriage and birth rates

The Trump administration announced a plan to give extra federal transit funding to areas with higher-than-average marriage and birth rates.

In a move to link demographic trends with infrastructure spending, the Trump administration unveiled a proposal that would increase federal transit aid for regions with higher marriage and birth rates than the national norm. Under the plan, the Federal Transit Administration could raise its share of project costs by as much as ten percentage points, subject to the area meeting specified demographic thresholds. Sean Duffy, the Transportation Secretary, framed the policy as a way to prioritize “smart, affordable projects with high ridership” in growing communities.

Funding caps remain at 60% for new large transit builds and 80% for capacity enhancements to existing systems. The program still requires lengthy approval and a binding grant agreement before any money is released, and no definitive schedule for rollout has been announced. The proposal follows President Trump’s earlier remarks about wanting to be known as the “fertilization president” amid declining national birth rates.
