On Thursday, the Trump administration published a 13-page Election Infrastructure Security Plan for the 2026 midterm elections. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin emphasized that election security is a component of national security and that the plan will be fully implemented. Produced by CISA, the document catalogues existing voting hardware, registration and tabulation systems and evaluates potential cyber hacks and physical attacks such as bomb threats.

Recommended safeguards include adopting paper ballots with post-election manual audits, conducting no-cost risk and vulnerability assessments, and continuous internet-asset scanning. The plan also offers election officials access to CISA’s regional directors as security advisors and leverages fusion centers for coordinated threat intelligence sharing. The rollout aims to strengthen the resilience and transparency of the U.S. voting process.
