Trump announces Russian diesel imports, sparking bipartisan backlash over sanctions breach

President Trump revealed a plan to bring Russian diesel into the United States, prompting criticism from both parties for violating sanctions and aiding Russia’s war in Ukraine.

President Donald Trump disclosed a surprise agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to ship tons of Russian diesel to the United States in an effort to curb soaring pump prices before the upcoming midterm elections. The proposal directly conflicts with a 2022 congressional ban on Russian energy imports, which requires a verified cease-fire and acceptance by Ukraine before any lift. Republicans and Democrats alike have condemned the plan, with Rep. Lloyd Doggett labeling it an illegal reward for Putin and former ambassador William Taylor warning it harms Ukraine.

An AP-NORC poll released on Oct. 1 indicated Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the energy issue and blame him for higher prices. While Congress recently approved a sanctions bill named for the late Sen. Lindsey Graham that would impose tariffs on countries continuing to import Russian oil, the president’s diesel deal threatens to undermine those measures. Treasury and State officials have not yet responded to inquiries about the policy’s legality.
