Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that large-scale oil, gas and mineral exploration is preparing to begin in Greenland, asserting that experts see the territory’s easily reachable oil reserves as among the world’s largest. He added that Greenland’s location is crucial for U.S. defense, suggesting any future assault would have to traverse the island, where American forces could intercept advanced weapons.

The statement arrives more than a month after the United States, Greenland and Denmark signed an agreement expanding U.S. military presence and granting broader access to the island’s airspace and territory. The deal allows the expansion of the northern Pituffik Space Base and the possible establishment of additional bases at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, while prohibiting non-NATO nations from setting up bases without consent.

Trump has previously emphasized Greenland’s strategic importance, even proposing its purchase or military control. Analysts note that commercial interest in Greenland’s minerals has been limited due to high extraction costs.
