Trump backs North Carolina Rep. Jennifer Balkcom as GOP nominee after Edwards withdraws
Donald Trump endorsed state Rep. Jennifer Balkcom for the 11th District seat in North Carolina after incumbent Chuck Edwards ended his re-election campaign.
President Donald Trump used his Truth Social platform to endorse North Carolina state Rep. Jennifer Balkcom as the Republican nominee for the 11th Congressional District. Balkcom responded on X, expressing gratitude and promising to collaborate with Trump to revitalize western North Carolina and make life more affordable for working families. The endorsement follows the withdrawal of incumbent Rep. Chuck Edwards, who had been the party’s original nominee after winning the March 3 primary.
Edwards announced his exit on Aug. 5 after the House Ethics Committee released a report recommending censure for persistent unprofessional behavior toward two young female staff members, including lavish gifts and personal invitations. The report detailed conduct that could be reasonably interpreted as sexual or romantic advances, which Edwards denied. Trump had previously endorsed Edwards before his primary victory. Balkcom’s campaign now moves forward with the president’s backing.
Why it matters
The endorsement could shape the GOP’s chances in a competitive North Carolina district and reflects Trump’s ongoing influence in party nominations.
