Trump cautions Carney that labeling him an enemy could damage Canada's economy

Donald Trump used his Truth Social platform to caution Prime Minister Mark Carney that casting the U.S. president as an enemy would ultimately harm Canada’s economy and political fortunes. The warning follows heightened friction between Washington and Ottawa, including Canada’s plan to impose retaliatory tariffs on roughly $20 billion of U.S. imports. Carney, speaking in Thunder Bay, announced a C$4.7 billion program to build VIA Rail passenger cars in Canada for the first time in four decades and said Canada is prepared to negotiate a trade agreement that benefits both nations.

Earlier, Carney had rebuked the Trump administration’s trade tactics, urging a more serious negotiating stance. The dispute also spilled into a naming controversy, with Trump claiming Apple Maps renamed Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” a move rejected by Canadian officials and Premier Doug Ford. Both leaders continue to trade barbs as negotiations stall.
