Trump likely to tap White House health aide Heidi Overton as FDA chief

President Trump is expected to nominate White House deputy domestic policy director Heidi Overton to become the next FDA commissioner.

Sources say Trump plans to put Heidi Overton, who has overseen health policy since the start of his second term, forward for the FDA's top job. Overton has worked closely with the Department of Health and Human Services on initiatives such as revising the food pyramid, adjusting the childhood vaccine schedule, and negotiating drug pricing. Her nomination would still require approval from a Senate committee. Critics within the Make America Healthy Again movement have at times expressed frustration with her approach.

Why it matters

The FDA leader influences national drug safety, vaccine policy and food regulations affecting all Americans.
