Trump proposes converting his Palm Beach golf club into a presidential retreat

President Trump has offered to turn his Trump International Golf Club in Palm Beach into a Camp David-style venue for world leaders, pledging free access and no federal cost.

President Trump sent a formal request to Palm Beach County officials asking that his Trump International Golf Club be repurposed as a private retreat for U.S. presidents and foreign dignitaries, mirroring the function of Camp David. He offered unrestricted use of the club’s amenities at no expense to the federal government, noting the property sits on county-leased land. County commissioners are said to be seriously considering the idea, according to reports.

An unnamed White House source pointed to the venue’s strong security features, its distance from residential structures, and its proximity to a Trump-named airport as key benefits. Attorney Harvey Oyer, who represents the club, argued that the project would elevate Palm Beach County’s global profile. Critics have labeled the move as a self-servicing use of private assets, but Trump frames it as a lasting contribution to future administrations.

Why it matters

The proposal could shift a historic presidential retreat to a privately owned site, raising questions about government use of personal property.
