Trump proposes renaming the Strait of Hormuz to 'Trump Strait' amid Iran tensions

Donald Trump suggested on Truth Social that the strategic Strait of Hormuz be renamed 'Trump Strait' while the United States maintains control of the waterway.

Donald Trump used his Truth Social account to propose that the internationally recognized Strait of Hormuz be renamed 'Trump Strait,' citing U.S. control of the corridor during the current hostilities with Iran. He argued that the new name would reflect a hotter, more assertive America. The waterway, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea, historically takes its name from the Zoroastrian god Ahura Mazda.

This is not the first time Trump has attempted to rename a geographic feature; earlier in his term he renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the 'Gulf of America' and more recently renamed Lake Ontario as 'Lake America,' though these changes have seen little international acceptance.

Why it matters

Renaming a key global shipping lane signals political posturing that could affect international diplomatic relations.
