Trump proposes renaming the Strait of Hormuz to "Trump Strait" at GOP convention

Donald Trump reiterated his idea to rename the Strait of Hormuz as the "Trump Strait" during his speech at the Republican midterm convention.

During his address at the Republican midterm convention, Donald Trump revived his plan to rename the Strait of Hormuz to the "Trump Strait." He asserted that the United States controls the passage and implied that the new name would reflect that authority, while also suggesting Iranian leaders would be displeased. The proposal comes after Trump previously issued executive orders renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America" and Lake Ontario as "Lake America."

He indicated an imminent official announcement of the change. The remarks were made in the context of the continuing Iran war, highlighting the geopolitical sensitivity of the waterway, which historically derives its name from the ancient deity Ahura Mazda.

Why it matters

Renaming a key maritime chokepoint could inflame U.S.-Iran tensions and affect global oil shipping.
