Trump proposes turning D.C. triumphal arch into a fortified drone and sniper hub
Donald Trump announced plans to convert the planned 250-foot arch at Memorial Circle into a military complex, but senior administration officials say they have no knowledge of such a proposal.
Donald Trump revealed on Truth Social that the 250-foot arch slated for Memorial Circle would be equipped with drones, sniper positions and substantial ammunition storage, effectively turning it into a military outpost. However, senior officials from the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation and the National Park Service reported to preservation advocates that they have not been briefed by the Defense Department about any such conversion.
The discrepancy could force a fresh or supplemental historic review, jeopardizing the administration’s target of securing final approval by November. Critics argue the structure would clash with the historic character of the area, exceed height limits, and lack clear congressional authorization. Aviation experts also caution that operating drones near the arch could increase collision risks in the busy airspace surrounding Reagan National Airport. Democrats, including Rep. Jared Huffman and Sen. Jeff Merkley, have pledged to block the project, labeling it illegal and unsupported by legislation.
