Trump's approval hits record low as economic worries rise ahead of midterms

A poll shows Donald Trump’s approval among registered voters has fallen to a historic low of 33%, driven by concerns over the economy and fuel costs.

A new poll carried out by Focaldata indicates that only 33% of registered voters approve of Donald Trump’s performance, marking the lowest level recorded since the poll’s inception. The decline follows a three-point drop from the prior month and reflects growing public pessimism about the economy, with a majority rejecting Trump’s trade and tariff policies. Almost two-thirds of those surveyed think the economy is moving in the wrong direction, and 57% say they are financially worse off under his presidency.

Support among Republican voters for Trump’s handling of jobs and the economy fell to 53%, an eight-point slide. The poll coincides with record diesel prices of $5.85 a gallon, linked to the Iran conflict, which Trump downplays as a minor operation. A separate Gallup poll shows a six-point advantage for Democrats in party identification, the widest gap in over a decade.

Why it matters

The slump in Trump’s approval could reshape Republican strategy and influence outcomes in the upcoming midterm elections.

How the sides frame it

MODERATE AGREEMENT

Left-leaning coverage stresses the economic fallout and record low approval as a sign of public pessimism, while right-leaning coverage treats the low approval as a electoral hurdle for GOP candidates, noting both the risk and Trump’s rallying appeal.

LEFT

Frames the story as evidence of worsening public pessimism about the economy and Trump’s policies, highlighting record low approval and financial hardship.

RIGHT

Frames the story as a political liability for Republican candidates in upcoming midterms, emphasizing the sub-40% approval hurdle and Trump’s still-potent rallying effect.

The left emphasises

  • only 33% of registered voters approve of Trump’s performance
  • majority reject his trade and tariff policies and feel the economy is heading the wrong way
  • 57% say they are financially worse off under his presidency

The right emphasises

  • approval sits slightly below 40%, a level traditionally unfavorable for the incumbent’s party in midterms
  • low rating could be a hurdle for Republican nominees in swing districts
  • Trump still commands attention and can rally enthusiasm despite low numbers
