According to policy director David Clement of the Consumer Choice Center, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin are especially vulnerable because of their heavy trade ties with Canada. Ohio faces roughly $2.3 billion in exposed exports, largely in machinery and metals, while Pennsylvania's exposure reaches just under $1.8 billion, primarily in equipment.
Michigan's auto industry could suffer as components cross the border multiple times, complicating supply chains. Clement argues that rising living and production costs will be a significant factor for voters as they head to the polls, and that even a Democratic win in Congress is unlikely to halt the tariff regime soon. The analysis suggests the trade dispute could become a decisive issue in the midterm contests.
