Trump's core supporters show growing disapproval ahead of midterm elections

A new poll finds that about 22% of voters who backed Donald Trump in 2024 now disapprove of his performance, a shift that could influence congressional races.

According to a recent one outlet-one outlet-Ipsos poll, about 22% of voters who supported Donald Trump in the 2024 election now express disapproval, accounting for roughly 8% of one outlet electorate. The disaffected group includes both Independents and Republicans and is critical of Trump’s handling of the Iran war, immigration enforcement and the energy sector, though they still prefer Democratic candidates on most issues except crime.

Voters such as Rick Sebring, a three-time Trump supporter, say the president has abandoned his anti-establishment promises. Others, like Wisconsin teacher Jill Vandermolen, say they have lost faith in him. The shift comes as Trump’s overall approval hovers near 33%, and his popularity has been gradually declining. Analysts note that this erosion of support could make traditionally red states like Texas, Florida and Iowa more competitive in the upcoming midterms.

Why it matters

Eroding support among Trump’s base could reshape the balance of power in Congress during the midterms.
