Trump's Funding Cuts Threaten Global LGBTQ Organizations
A new report shows that cuts to State Department and USAID funding under President Donald Trump have left many LGBTQ groups worldwide facing severe financial strain.
The report, titled “Breaking Point: The Urgent Need to Invest in Global LGBTQ Movements,” documents the impact of funding reductions ordered by President Donald Trump. Among the 229 groups surveyed, 90% reported loss of U.S. aid, with 49% losing over half of their total budget and 75% losing more than a quarter. Forty percent describe an imminent risk of closure, while fewer than 4% consider themselves stable.
Specific cases include Diversidad Dominicana in the Dominican Republic, the Háttér Society in Hungary, feminist queer collectives in Kyrgyzstan, and the May 17 Association in Turkey, all of which have seen programs curtailed or staff layoffs. The study also notes that prior U.S. assistance had funded initiatives such as condom distribution in Afghanistan and job-creation projects in Serbia. Critics argue that the funding freeze may exacerbate health and safety challenges for LGBTQ communities worldwide.
