Trump's Silence on Netanyahu Raises Questions Ahead of Israeli Election

Donald Trump has not formally endorsed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the upcoming election, despite past public support during Netanyahu's legal troubles.

Donald Trump highlighted his history of successful endorsements but has refrained from officially supporting Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel's forthcoming parliamentary vote. Although he voiced backing during Netanyahu's corruption trial and a pardon request, Trump cited disagreements over the wars with Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran as reasons for his restraint. Netanyahu recently turned down Trump's 15-point peace plan and the two have sparred over strikes in Gaza, Lebanon and Syria.

Former Israeli ambassador Michael Oren argued that Trump’s silence itself functions as a political signal, while Council on Foreign Relations fellow Elliott Abrams noted that a change in government would likely leave Israel's foreign policy largely unchanged. Polls suggest a coalition of anti-Netanyahu parties could fall short of a majority, potentially leading to another election and extending Netanyahu’s tenure temporarily. Analysts contend that U.S. policy actions, rather than a personal endorsement, will have greater influence on Israeli voters.

Why it matters

Trump's stance could shape U.S.-Israel relations and affect the balance of power in Israel's upcoming election.
