Trump says no barrier to ending U.S. sanctions on Turkey
President Trump told reporters there is no obstacle to lifting CAATSA sanctions on Turkey and reiterated his friendship with President Erdoğan.
At a press encounter on Oct. 2, President Trump was asked why the United States has kept CAATSA sanctions on Turkey despite his earlier pledge at a NATO summit. He answered that no impediment exists to rescinding the sanctions and highlighted his ongoing friendship with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The sanctions, enacted under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, affect Turkey’s Defense Industries Agency and a number of Turkish officials because of Ankara’s acquisition of Russian S-400 air-defence missiles.
While Trump reaffirmed his intent to make Erdoğan happy, he did not provide a date for when the sanctions might be lifted. The measures have been in force since December 2020.
