Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at speeding up the delivery of benefits and job opportunities for veterans. The directive mandates the Departments of War, Veterans Affairs and Labor to adopt modern data-management practices and deploy artificial-intelligence tools to hasten claim processing. It also obliges federal, state and local governments to assign a veterans specialist to each service member leaving active duty to guide benefit applications.
Outdated legacy systems have been blamed for 90- to 180-day transfer delays, contributing to a backlog of over 70,000 transitioning members inherited from the prior administration, after a historic peak of about 378,000. VA Secretary Doug Collins warned that excessive paperwork discourages applicants and complicates the system. The order further seeks to improve career counseling, training and job placement for veterans. Fraud against veterans cost $419 million in 2024, a problem the administration says it will address.
