Trump strikes deal with Putin to lift diesel sanctions and pause energy attacks

Donald Trump announced an agreement with Vlagyimir Putyin that eases some sanctions, permitting Russian diesel shipments to the U.S., and a mutual cease-fire on attacks against each other's energy facilities.

The U.S. president said the pact with Russia will relax parts of the existing sanctions regime, allowing Russian diesel to enter international markets and the United States. He also declared that both Russian and Ukrainian forces will refrain from targeting each other's energy infrastructure, a move that surprised officials in Moscow and Kyiv. While Trump initially hinted at ending intelligence support to Ukraine, the final statement left all existing assistance unchanged. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian parliament approved a law enabling Hungarian-language schooling in the Carpathian region.

Why it matters

The deal could reshape U.S.-Russia trade, affect the Ukraine war dynamics, and impacts minority language rights in Ukraine.
