Trump urged to back Republika Srpska independence amid Balkan strategic vacuum
An analyst argues that Washington should recognize Republika Srpska’s sovereignty to prevent Chinese and Russian influence in the Balkans.
The author claims the Western Balkans’ multi-ethnic experiment is unsustainable and that the Dayton Accords merely cemented a frozen front line, trapping about 1.1 million ethnic Serbs. Since 2013, the region has lost more than 620,000 residents, creating a demographic crisis. Chinese capital exceeding $3 billion and Russian energy projects have deepened external leverage over Republika Srpska.
To counter this, the analyst urges President Donald Trump to recognize Republika Srpska’s independence and grant it Major Non-NATO Ally status, mirroring Kosovo. He proposes a three-part U.S. strategy: a joint security protocol with Pristina, conversion of opaque Chinese debt into transparent U.S.-backed instruments, and establishing a Pentagon-run logistics node in Banja Luka. The goal is to transform a fragile entity into a reliable partner and block adversarial footholds on NATO’s southeastern flank.
Why it matters
The proposal highlights how Balkan instability could let China and Russia expand influence near NATO borders.
