TTAP denounces Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor’s rule and emergency as unconstitutional

The Tehreek-i-Tahafuz Ayin-i-Pakistan condemned the imposition of governor’s rule and an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, calling the move unconstitutional.

At a press briefing, TTAP labeled the governor’s rule and emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as a breach of democratic principles and vowed to challenge the measures in courts, assemblies and public gatherings. PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan said the actions would not address security issues, emphasizing that a unified, politically-backed counter-terrorism strategy is needed. He rejected claims that the provincial government had failed to cooperate with the federal authorities and called for the release of political detainees, including former prime minister Imran Khan, along with hospital access for him.

The party cited numerous court petitions and highlighted the arrest of PTI members across Punjab and the provincial assembly. TTAP also reaffirmed its intention to hold the long march on August 5 as a peaceful protest for constitutional rights. Secretary General Salman Akram Raja stressed the need for consensus on security decisions and cited recent negotiations with various political leaders.

Why it matters

The protest challenges a federal takeover of a province, raising questions about constitutional limits and democratic governance in Pakistan.
