TUC chief Paul Nowak appointed to Bank of England board as non-executive director
Paul Nowak, General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress, has been named by John Healey as a non-executive director on the Bank of England’s Court of Directors.
John Healey announced the appointment of Paul Nowak, the General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress, as a non-executive director on the Bank of England’s Court of Directors. In this capacity Nowak will contribute to the bank’s strategy, governance, budget and risk framework and help ensure the effective discharge of its statutory functions. The government noted that the TUC represents 47 unions and 5.3 million workers, and that Nowak has spoken for the organization at the International Labour Organisation, the OECD and the G20, while also serving on the board of Unity Trust Bank.
He affirmed that neither he nor the TUC has taken part in party-political activity for the last five years. The appointment arrives as unions have donated roughly £30 million to Labour since 2021 and Nowak has recently campaigned against Reform’s donations. Commentators such as Andy Haldane warned that the government’s fiscal approach may be constrained by spending limits.
Why it matters
A leading trade-union figure joining the BoE board could shape monetary policy and reflect broader labour influence on UK finance.
