TUC chief says Andy Burnham can beat Nigel Farage and win Labour majority

In an interview, Paul Nowak, head of the Trades Union Congress, said Andy Burnham is well positioned to overcome Nigel Farage and deliver a Labour majority when the next general election is held. He argued that Farage’s visibility only harms his popularity, contrasting his rhetoric with Burnham’s focus on issues that matter to workers. Nowak rejected speculation about a snap election, emphasizing that the public prefers to see the government implement the promises made in July 2024.

He pointed to Labour’s recent successes, including Burnham’s win in the Makerfield by-election and Bev Craig’s victory in the Greater Manchester mayoral by-election, as signs of growing support. While acknowledging a “Burnham bounce” in the polls, he warned that Reform UK remains a concern but believes its policies will soon affect voters’ pockets.
