Tucson police recruit killed in home invasion; one suspect jailed, another still fleeing

Around 6 a.m. on Wednesday, a home invasion shooting in southwestern Tucson left 23-year-old Carlos Ramirez, a Tucson police academy recruit slated to graduate on Aug. 27, dead and his 23-year-old fiancée, also a corrections officer, hospitalized. Sheriff Chris Nanos reported the attackers wore all-black attire and ski masks. Police later arrested Santiago Jorge Rogers, 39, at a Tucson hotel; he is being held without bond.

The second suspect, 33-year-old Alex James Barnett, who has prior burglary, weapons and unlawful imprisonment convictions and is also known as Alex Wilson, remains at large, last seen on a Harley-Davidson with Arizona plate DA466. Surveillance footage captured Rogers and Barnett at a gas-station convenience store before the shooting and a third unidentified man parking a gray Acura MDX SUV afterward. Detectives are urging anyone with information to contact authorities.
