TUM study challenges EU's zero-emission label for electric cars
A new analysis by the Technical University of Munich finds that battery-electric vehicles emit significantly less CO₂ than gasoline cars over their full life cycle, contradicting the EU’s zero-emission classification.
Scientists at the Technical University of Munich compiled data from 19 studies and 47 scenarios to assess the full life-cycle emissions of battery-electric vehicles, including mining, battery and vehicle production, energy supply, operation and recycling. Their analysis concludes that electric cars still produce notable CO₂ emissions, contrary to the EU’s regulatory assumption of zero grams per kilometre, which ignores production and electricity generation impacts.
TUM President Thomas Hofmann described the EU’s approach as a substantial misdirection of climate policy. The findings have prompted calls from Bavarian Minister President Markus Söder, VDA President Hildegard Müller, and several CDU/CSU politicians to reconsider strict electric-vehicle quotas, fleet limits and penalty mechanisms. The debate highlights the need for a technology-mix strategy rather than an exclusive focus on electrification.
