Turceni coal power plant shuts down its last operating unit amid ongoing energy crunch

The Turceni thermal power station halted its sole remaining 285 MW unit after a boiler failure, temporarily stopping electricity generation.

At approximately 5:00 a.m., engineers identified a fault in the boiler of group 5, the last operational unit at Turceni thermal power plant, part of the Complexul Energetic Oltenia. The unit, which provides 285 MW, was stopped roughly three hours after the issue was found. The problem involved a repeat failure in the vaporizer area of the boiler.

Local sources say repair work could be completed before the end of the week, allowing the unit to resume service. This interruption suspends all electricity output from Turceni, leaving the plant without any generating capacity while the country faces an energy crisis. Group 5 has experienced several accidental shutdowns in recent months, and the government previously approved its temporary availability until early 2028 to support the national grid.

Why it matters

The loss of Turceni's only active unit reduces Romania's electricity supply during a critical energy shortage.
