Turkey aims to showcase geothermal leadership at COP31

Marit Brommer, CEO of the International Geothermal Association, said COP31 offers Turkey a platform to highlight its geothermal expertise and attract investment.

Marit Brommer, head of the International Geothermal Association, told Anadolu Agency that COP31 is a strategic moment for Turkey to display its geothermal know-how and draw financing. She highlighted geothermal’s role in securing stable energy supplies, offering sustainable heating and cooling, and cutting reliance on imported fuels. Brommer argued that the sector should be seen as a multi-use resource supporting entire energy systems and local economies.

She identified investment gaps, regulatory uncertainty and long permitting times as barriers, and urged governments to clarify resource rights and mitigate exploration risks. Turkey’s position as the world’s fourth-largest geothermal electricity producer and Europe’s top installer, coupled with its varied direct-use projects, makes it a model for emerging markets in Central Asia, the Balkans and Africa. Brommer hopes COP31 will integrate geothermal into broader discussions on energy security and climate action.

Why it matters

Turkey’s geothermal showcase could spur global investment and diversify renewable energy strategies.
